拍品描述
China, mid-19th - early 20th century. Modeled seated on a rocky outcrop with his left leg drawn in and the right stretched out in a striding pose, dressed in a long robe tied below the chest, a belt with studs below the protruding belly, his left hand holding a scroll and the right held in a fist, the face with large round eyes and a long beard, and wearing an official's hat. Covered overall in glazes of emerald-green, amber, cream, and aubergine. Provenance: Formerly the property of the H?tel du Palais Biarritz. French trade, by repute acquired from the above. The H?tel du Palais Biarritz is a historic luxury hotel that was originally built for the Empress Eugenie around 1855 as a summer villa. It was due to the visits of the imperial couple that the village of Biarritz developed into a fashionable resort. In 1880, the villa was sold and converted into a hotel casino. It was devastated by fire in 1903, but was lavishly rebuilt and enlarged within the original walls. For many years the hotel attracted the international elite, including members of the European royalty such as King Edward VII, who paid several extended visits. Although the hotel later fell into disrepair, and closed for a period in the 1950s, it has since been refurbished and is again a luxury hotel. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, traces of use, and manufacturing irregularities, a small chip to the right foot, minor old fills to base, and little glaze flaking.Weight: 6.1 kg Dimensions: Height 45.3 cmGlazed tiles are today considered one of the hallmarks of classical Chinese architecture. However, despite their popularity in modern times, they were relatively scarce until after the end of the Tang Dynasty. Even then, during the Song and Yuan Dynasties, they were still infrequently used. It was not until the rise of the Ming Dynasty that glazed tiles became a popular decorative devise extensively employed in temples, altars, imperial palaces, and gardens. Beijing became the center of glazed architectural tile production during the Ming period, and colorfully decorated pagodas began to sprout up around this region. Production continued throughout the Qing dynasty and well into the republic period.Literature comparison:Compare a related sancai glazed roof tile depicting Yanluo, King of Hell, dated 1523, 83.5 cm high, in the Royal Ontario Museum, object number 923.6.3.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's London, 4 December 2018, lot 61Price: GBP 3,000 or approx.
