拍品描述
China. Modeled with six separate arms, seated on an elaborate raised lotus base with four rows of petals above a spray of lotus enclosing the lower section. The face downcast with a gentle smile, the hair combed into a chignon and framed by a seven-leaf crown, each leaf depicting a small figure of Buddha, the six arms radiating around the body, holding two mirrors, a small covered box, a scroll, a temple bell, and a vessel, all covered in an cream white glaze. (7)Provenance: Arne Bruun Rasmussen Kunstauktioner, no. 32657 (inscribed label to base), Copenhagen, Denmark, ca. 1970s. A private collection in Denmark, acquired from the above, and thence by descent. Condition: Good condition with old wear, minor manufacturing irregularities, old repairs to arms and petals around the base, tiny chips here and there, light surface scratches. Weight: 3.7 kg Dimensions: Height 37 cmThe Daoist Goddess Doumu or 'The Dipper Mother', as her name implies, is the mother of the seven stars of the Northern Dipper (Ursa Major). In her hagiography, it is recounted that she made a vow to 'give birth to sacred children who would assist the Universe'. When she was incarnated as a woman named Lady of Violet Light, consort to King Zhou Yu, she bathed in the Pool of Warm Jade and Golden Lotuses. After she suddenly felt 'moved', lotus buds in the pool blossomed to reveal children that eventually became stars in the sky. Doumu was worshipped to undo the effects of negative karma. See Taoism and the Arts of China, Chicago, 2000, pp.282-283.Auction result comparison:Type: Related Auction: Bonhams London, 12 May 2016, lot 62Price: GBP 11,875 or approx.
