拍品描述
China, 1644-1912. Sensitively modeled, standing in a graceful pose on a base of swirling clouds. The full robes are pulled tightly around the body and draped over her head in a cowl, with one foot and a beaded necklace exposed, as well as her hands supporting two thorny lotus sprays, the face with a serene expression marked by heavy-lidded downcast eyes centered by an urna, her upswept hair dressed in a topknot fastened behind a tiara. The fine cream-white glaze is a creamy tone. The back impressed with a square seal.Inscriptions: To the back, 'He Chaozong'. Provenance: From an old private aristocratic collection in Austria, thence by descent. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, small losses to two fingers, one finger reattached, and few minuscule nibbles to exposed areas.Weight: 1.6 kg Dimensions: Height 33.3 cmThe present figure is one of a group from the Dehua kilns bearing the seal impression of the celebrated potter He Chaozong. As his dates are unrecorded, He Chaozong was previously thought to have worked in the first half of the 17th century. Later research has revealed that he was already active in the 16th century and some Chinese scholars even believe him to have been active as early as 1522 (see R. Kerr, 'Introductory Remarks on Dehua Ware, in John Ayers, Rose Kerr, et al., Blanc de Chine: Porcelain from Dehua, A Catalogue of the Hickley Collection, 2002, p. 10).A number of known variations of the impressed He Chaozong potter's mark are published in P. J. Donnelly, Blanc De Chine, New York, 1967, pp. 355-356, either within a double-gourd outline or in a square format, as in the case of the present figure.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 8 December 2016, lot 84Price: USD 16,250 or approx.
