拍品描述
Expert's note: This lot is a particularly rare and unusual example within this fascinating group, as the eyes are pierced only around the pupils. In most examples, the pupils are completely absent, whereas in this piece, they remain intact due to this distinctive piercing method.China, 1750-1850. The crouched feline with the tail curled against its haunches, the body covered in a vivid emerald-green glaze, the face well detailed with alert yellow-glazed eyes and pricked ears, the top of its back with a quatrefoil aperture, the interior hollow. Provenance: Robert Ansteth, Honolulu, Hawaii, United States, by 1960. A private collection in the United States, acquired from the above and thence by descent. Two labels from Ansteth Limited Honolulu, one inscribed, 'Antique Ching 1820-50 AD green glazed cat' and the other, 'Tao Kuang'. Robert Ansteth was an American architect, interior designer, and furniture maker who became well-known and successful during the 1950s. He was based in Honolulu and commuted regularly to Japan to buy furniture and accessories and to direct the supervision of articles designed by him.Condition: Overall in good condition, with expected wear and manufacturing irregularities, including firing cracks—one of which, located on the interior, was patched. The right ear has a small repair with minor glaze touch-ups.Weight: 523 g (excl. stand), 816 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Length 31 cmWith a finely carved fitted wood stand. (2)The cat is traditionally an auspicious animal in China. The word for cat in Chinese, mao, is homophonous with the word for the ripe age between eighty and ninety (mao), making the cat a symbol of longevity. Cat-form vessels were therefore much favored although night lights such as the present piece are rare.According to Chinese lore, the gods appointed cats to oversee life after the world was created. Cats preferred instead to sleep in sunbeams and play with falling cherry blossoms. The management of earthly duties was thus transferred to humans, and cats have since indulged themselves in the more relaxing aspects of life. Many other myths surround the cat in Chinese culture. Some insist that cats can see spirits in the dark, which may explain the prevalence of cat-shaped night-lights beginning in the latter part of the Ming dynasty.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related turquoise-glazed cat nightlight with similar quatrefoil aperture, dated to the 18th century, 19.1 cm long, in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, accession number 1955-50-345. Compare a related green glazed cat, dated to the Kangxi period, 4.8 cm long, in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden, inventory number PO 4388.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Bonhams London, 3 November 2022, lot 190 Price: GBP 8,288 or approx.
