拍品描述
China, 13th-15th century. Skillfully worked in the form of a recumbent camel turning its head backwards to rest, the feet tucked below, and the humps and tail fur detailed with incisions. The semi-translucent stone is of a celadon tone with dark brown areas and veins as well as cloudy inclusions. Provenance: British trade. Acquired from a private estate in Scotland. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. The stone with few natural fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks.Weight: 170 g Dimensions: Length 8.8 cmCamels are part of the Chinese repertoire of animals that are typically depicted in a seated or resting position. Associated with the opening of the Silk Road during the Han dynasty, they became popular during the Tang dynasty when pottery representations of camels either standing or seated were included amongst the figures that were placed in tombs. They subsequently enjoyed popularity again under the Mongols of the Yuan dynasty.Jade carvings of this type were often found on scholars' desks, where they served both as paperweights or brushrests and as works of art in their own right. The posture of this camel, with its legs folded beneath the body and exaggerated turn of the head, is often found in Song animal sculptures and aligns with the stylistic change seen across Song art where animal representations became much more naturalistic. This style appears to derive from Tang coiled animals which were in turn inspired by the severely coiled feline of the Han period.Literature comparison:Compare a yellow jade camel with the head similarly turned to the side and the body softly contoured, 10.2 cm long, dated to the Song dynasty, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - 41 - Jadeware (II), Hong Kong, 1995, p. 68, pl. 58. Compare a deep-brown and yellowish-green jade camel, dated to the Tang dynasty, 9.8 cm long, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number A.28-1935.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Bonhams Hong Kong, 29 May 2023, lot 116Price: HKD 256,000 or approx.
