拍品描述
China, 1368-1644. The slide carved to one side in low relief with two facing chilong, their heads shaped like a ruyi and their bifurcated tails intertwined. The reverse decorated with a taotie mask. The semi-translucent stone is of a rich mottled brown color transitioning to a reddish-brown to the reverse with a grayish-white area forming the loop. Provenance: From the private collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, New York. An old label 'WSA 1975' to one side. Alan Hartman (1930-2023) was an influential American art dealer, who took over his parents' antique business in Manhattan and established the legendary Rare Art Gallery on Madison Avenue, with further locations in Dallas and Palm Beach. His wife Simone (nee Horowitz) already served as assistant manager of the New York gallery before the couple married in 1975, and together they built a renowned collection for over half a century and became noted art patrons, enriching the collections of important museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (which opened the Alan and Simone Hartman Galleries in 2013) as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum in New York. Alan Hartman has been described as the greatest antiques dealer of our generation, and was widely recognized as a world authority in Chinese jade, bronzes, and Asian works of art. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and a tiny nick to one edge.Weight: 69.5 g Dimensions: Length 8.6 cmExpert's note: The present lot is rare and unusual for the taotie mask carved to the underside of the loop, masterfully picked out by the lapidary from a white layer in the stone. This section of scabbard slides is commonly left plain and there are no other examples known to this author which show a similar carving.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 23 March 2012, lot 1873 Price: USD 15,000 or approx. EUR 20,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A grey and russet jade scabbard slide, Ming dynasty Expert remark: Compare the closely related form, manner of carving, and chilong motif. Note the different size (15.1 cm).
