拍品描述
China, 206 BC-8 AD. This vessel is shaped like a horn rising from a twisted, bifurcated tail-form handle at the base to an oval mouth. The sides are carved in openwork to depict an archaic chilong and a phoenix spiraling toward the mouth. The translucent stone is of a pale celadon color with icy white inclusions and areas of white calcification. Provenance: From the private collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, New York. Alan Hartman (1930-2023) was an influential American art dealer, who took over his parents' antique business in Manhattan and established the legendary Rare Art Gallery on Madison Avenue, with further locations in Dallas and Palm Beach. His wife Simone (nee Horowitz) already served as assistant manager of the New York gallery before the couple married in 1975, and together they built a renowned collection for over half a century and became noted art patrons, enriching the collections of important museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (which opened the Alan and Simone Hartman Galleries in 2013) as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum in New York. Alan Hartman has been described as the greatest antiques dealer of our generation, and was widely recognized as a world authority in Chinese jade, bronzes, and Asian works of art.Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear, little nibbling, and few tiny chips to exposed areas. The stone with natural fissures, areas of calcification, and signs of weathering and erosion. Soil encrustations. Remnants of ancient pigment.Weight: 324.9 g (excl. stand) Dimensions: Height 12 cm (excl. stand)Mounted on an associated wood and metal stand, coated in red velvet, which was added by the Hartman's. (2)The carving of jade vessels, like the present rhyton, was both a labor-intensive and resource-demanding process. These intricate works not only required substantial amounts of material, but also generated considerable waste during the hollowing out of the vessel. Ancient vessels in particular, reflect both the high status and significant means of their owner.Literature comparison: Compare a related pale celadon jade rhyton cup, dated to the Han dynasty, 18.4 cm tall, in the Nanyue Tomb & Museum, Guangzhou, accession number 3768. Compare a related pale celadon jade rhyton cup with dragon and phoenix design, dated to the Western Han dynasty, 10.1 cm tall, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, accession number 故玉002790N000000000.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby's Paris, 21 December 2023, lot 88Price: EUR 19,050 or approx. EUR 19,500 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: A jade 'chilong' bead, Western Han dynastyExpert remark: The bead, dated to the Western Han dynasty, depicts a group of chilong spiraling the work in a similar manner, entering and exiting the jade, as if moving amongst celestial realms, and also is carved on a stone of similar hue.
