拍品描述
China, c. 12th-15th century. The bird carved seated with its feet tucked beneath, upswept wings neatly incised with plumage, the tail feathers curving downwards, and the face with large circular eyes. The body pierced vertically through the back. The opaque stone of a creamy beige color with faint russet veins inclusions. Provenance: French trade. Acquired from a private estate in Paris, France. Condition: Very good condition with notable wear, extensive calcification, minor nicks, and natural fissures and inclusions. Weight: 102 g Dimensions: Length 6.5 cmThe design of this piece closely resembles bird-shaped finials, which experienced a resurgence in both quality and popularity during the Song to Ming dynasties. These finials, often depicting doves, trace their origins back to the Han dynasty, where they were awarded as symbols of great respect for significant achievements, such as reaching a certain age.In Chinese, the character for chicken is ji, a homonym for fortune. The first Chinese character of rooster (gongji) is likewise a homonym for achievement (gong), while the chicken's crest (guan) stands for official and its crowing (ming) for fame. As a result, the ancients often considered the chicken as an auspicious animal symbolizing meritorious fame (gongming) and promotion in rank and office (feng guan jin jue).Literature comparison:Compare a related jade figure of a hen, dated to the Southern Song to Ming dynasty, in the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution, accession number S1987.757.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's London, 6 November 2007, lot 41 Price: GBP 4,750 or approx. EUR 11,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A celadon and russet jade bird finial, Song dynasty Expert remark: Compare the related manner of carving, albeit depicting a different type of bird and functioning as a finial. Note the size (10 cm).Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's New York, 15 September 2011, lot 922Price: USD 554,500 or approx. EUR 748,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: An unusual small yellow jade figure of a recumbent hen, Ming/early Qing dynastyExpert remark: Compare the similar incised details to the plumage. The Christie's piece is more realistic in style, while the current lot exhibits a greater sense of archaism in its carving.
