拍品描述
A SANDSTONE HEAD OF BUDDHA, GUPTA PERIOD, CIRCA 6TH CENTURYPublished: John Siudmak, Indian and Himalayan Sculpture, London, 2016, p. 32, no. 29.India, Uttar Pradesh. Sensitively carved with soft, gentle curves and covered in tightly coiled curls arranged in neat rows. The half-closed eyes with heavy lids conveying a meditative state of deep contemplation. The ears with elongated lobes, symbolizing the renunciation of material wealth. Provenance: Allegedly found in the vicinity of Prayagraj (formerly called Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh. A private collection in Japan, acquired before 2010. John Siudmak, London, 2016. Matthew Barton Ltd., London, 21 November 2018, lot 221, (dated to the post-Gupta period, circa 8th century). A private collection in the United Kingdom, acquired from the above. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, obvious losses, few chips, scattered nicks and scratches, signs of weathering and erosion, and soil encrustations.Weight: 2,219 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 17.5 cm (excl. stand), 21.5 cm (incl. stand)With a fitted modern stand. (2)Expert's note: The present head has a number of features which indicate an influence from Sarnath in the late Gupta period. These include the lightly arched eyebrows, the downward gaze, the pendant lower lip, the long lobe of the ears, and the snail-shell curls. It compares with several heads from Kaushambi, and shares the feature of a dimple on the upper lip with a Buddha head found at that site, now in the Allahabad University Museum. Cf. Tripathi 2003, fig. 155. There appears to be no parallel for the treatment of the top of the ushnisha, which is decorated with a lotus flower. The sculpture is too early to belong to Buddha as an avatar of Vishnu, a doctrine dating to the medieval period, when Vasudeva is often shown with a lotus on the top of his head. Classifying it as a Jain Tirthankara on the basis of the snail-shell curls is problematic, because such a prominent ushnisha or cranial protuberance is not found on Jinas of this period. Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Sarnath stone head of Buddha, dated 5th to early 6th century, in the National Museum, New Delhi, accession number 47.20.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's London, 27 April 2012, lot 512Price: GBP 7,500 or approx.
