拍品描述
A RED SANDSTONE FIGURE OF VISHNU, MATHURA, GUPTA EMPIREIndia, Uttar Pradesh, 4th-5th century. Finely carved standing in samabhanga with his upper main hands holding a conch and lotus seed, his lowered right hand clutching a discus. The deity is clad in a short dhoti secured with a belt at the waist and richly adorned with an elaborate necklace, floral garland, and fine jewelry. His serene face sensitively modeled with almond-shaped eyes, elegantly arched brows, and full lips forming a subtle smile, the head surmounted by a tall miter crown centered by a lion framed by pearls. Provenance: From a private collection in Sint-Martens-Latem, East Flanders, Belgium.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, obvious losses, minor signs of weathering and erosion, nicks and scratches, structural fissures.Weight: 76.3 kg (incl. stand)Dimensions: Height 84 cm (excl. stand), 88 cm (incl. stand)The Gupta period has often been referred to as a Golden Age due to the great refinement in art and architecture that was achieved and proved to be a massive influence on a large number of contemporaneous and succeeding kingdoms both near and far. Particular credit is due to the perfect balance the Guptas struck between the ideals of beauty, sensuality, and spirituality. Mathura and Sarnath were major centers of production during this period. Gupta art shows a continuity from the sculptures of Mathura and Gandhara but incorporates these styles with new iconographic features drawn from Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related Gupta sandstone figure of Vishnu, 79.4 cm high, dated to the 4th century, in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, object number B73S17. Compare a closely related Gupta sandstone figure of Vishnu, 84.8 cm high, formerly in the collection of James and Marilynn Alsdorf and now in the Art Institute of Chicago, reference number 2021.424. Compare a closely related Gupta sandstone head of Vishnu, 40.6 cm high, dated to the 4th century, in the Cleveland Museum of Art, accession number 1969.57.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Sotheby's New York, 17 March 2015, lot 1071 Price: USD 27,500 or approx.
