拍品描述
A BUFF SANDSTONE FIGURE OF A DANCING GANESHA, 11TH-12TH CENTURYIndia, Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh. Deeply carved, the present work depicts the multi-armed Ganesha bearing his broken tusk, an axe, and a bowl of modaks (sweet offerings) from which he samples with his his long curling trunk. The softly rounded contours emphasize the sculpture's three-dimensionality, creating a naturalistic form. The artist has skillfully carved the deity as he dances with joy, following in the footsteps of his father, Shiva Nataraja.Provenance: The collection of Dr. John Ross Sr., thence by descent to his son and thence by further direct descent. Dr. John Ross Sr. was an American physician and art collector. He passed down his collection and passion for collecting to his son Dr. John Ross Jr. (1928-2019), a pioneering cardiologist whose research is widely used in diagnosing heart disorders. A part of the collection was donated to the World Cultures Art Collection of Mesa College, San Diego.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, obvious losses, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, scattered nicks and scratches.Weight: 16.6 kg (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 48 cm (excl. stand), 54.5 m (incl. stand)Mounted on an associate stand. (2)Ganesha, the lovable and mischievous elephant-headed god from the Hindu pantheon, is widely revered as the Lord of Beginnings and the Remover of Obstacles. He is worshipped throughout India at the beginning of journeys or undertaking of new endeavors. As such, he is often the first deity encountered in large, multi-sanctum temple complexes, where he is propitiated with a variety of offerings. His rotund belly is not only appropriate to his pachydermic identity, but also reinforces his powers to shower his devotes with abundance. As a paragon of wisdom, he broke off his own tusk and fashioned it into a pen to record the Mahabharata at the time of its recitation by the great sage Vyasa. The son of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha is one of the most popular gods in modern India.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related sandstone figure of a dancing Ganesha, Madhya Pradesh, 10th century, 91.4 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2007.480.2.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's New York, 13 September 2017, lot 613Price: USD 37,500 or approx.
