拍品描述
A GRANITE FIGURE OF KALI, CHOLA PERIOD, 11TH CENTURYSouth India, Tamil Nadu. Seated in lalitasana on a waisted plinth, the fierce deity holding a skull-cup and trident in her primary hands, the raised secondary arms holding a damaru and noose. Dressed in a diaphanous dhoti, the bare-chested figure adorned with beaded jewelry. The fierce face marked with heavy-lidded downcast eyes under arched brows, flanked by ears with large pendulous earrings, the hair is tied up and pushed back by a band to the forehead and stands erect as flames of a fire, forming a dramatic halo.Provenance: An old private collection in Switzerland, by repute purchased from Rene Jaquerod, Pully and Zurich, and thence by descent in the family. Koller, Zurich, 18 June 2024, lot 452, estimate CHF 10,000 or approx. EUR 10,500 (converted at the time of writing). Rene Jacquerod was a Swiss collector and dealer of Asian art, active from the 1940s until the 1960s, who donated part of his collection to the Museum Rietberg in Zurich.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, obvious losses, weathering and erosion, scattered nicks and scratches, natural fissures, stains, and encrustations. Weight: 100.7 kgDimensions: Height 78 cmKali is the fierce form of Uma (Parvati), the female aspect of Shiva. Parvati has her own cycle of myths, and she herself emanates into different forms. Some branches of Hinduism consider the goddess to be the supreme creator divinity herself, who generated all the other gods, including Shiva. Kali is the wrathful form of the goddess generated in the midst of a battle with a demon that the gods failed to conquer. Kali was to drink his blood before any drop fell to ground, or else a new demon would instantly be generated. These demons are metaphors for human vices, such as egotistic pride and arrogance.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related South Indian figure of Kali, 158 cm high, dated 14th-15th century, in the Musee Guimet, accession number MA850. Compare a closely related Chola figure of Chamunda dated to the 11th century in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai, accession number 98.5.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 24 September 2020, lot 965 Price: USD 52,500 or approx. EUR 61,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A granite figure of Vishnu, South India, Tamil Nadu, Chola period, 11th century Expert remark: Compare the closely related modeling, manner of carving, and stone. Note the similar size (74.3 cm).
