(2)Serpent worship enjoys widespread popularity in southern India. It is especially the cobra which is held sacred. Upper caste communities consider it a sin to kill it and believe that the man who does so will be stricken with all kinds of misfortunes. The great popularity of this cult, in the south, is testified by the snake slabs or Nagakal, which are usually found, sometimes, in great numbers, at the entrance of a town or village. Groups of such stones may be seen in a corner of the courtyard of a temple, either Hindu or Jain, near a tank or under a sacred tree. They are mostly due to childless wives who make a vow to install a snake-stone if they are blessed with an offspring (see a limestone nagakal from Tamil Nadu, dated 6th century, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number IM.309-1913). Another example of serpent worship in South India are images of Naga and Nagini as part of a bas-relief representing the Descent of the Ganges or the Arjuna's Penance, in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu.
