(2)Ramleela is a dramatic folk re-enactment of the life of Rama according to the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana. It particularly refers to the plays and dance events that are staged during the annual autumn festival of Navaratri in India. After the enactment of the legendary war between good and evil, the Ramleela celebrations climax in the Vijayadashami (Dussehra) night festivities where the giant grotesque effigies of evil such as of the rakshasa (demon) Ravana are burnt, typically with fireworks.Hanuman holds a significant and revered role in Ramleela celebrations, as he is considered one of the most important characters in the epic Ramayana. Hanuman represents unwavering devotion, strength, and courage. His selfless service to Lord Rama, courage in battle, and humble nature inspire audiences. Symbolizing ideal devotion and loyalty, Hanuman's presence in the performance highlights the victory of good over evil and encourages virtues like humility, faith, and determination.Literature comparison: Compare a related hanuman mask in Ramleela of Varnasi illustrated by Jiwan Pani, Hanuman and Traditional Indian Theatre, Journal of the Sangeet Natak Academi, no. 35, New Delhi, 1975, p. 9.
