拍品描述
Finely cast and neatly incised. Maheshvara is depicted with four arms, with her upper right hand holding a trisula (trident), seated in sattvaparyanka on an oval lotus throne atop a rectangular plinth. In her upper left palm is a lozenge shaped attribute, possibly a stylized damaru or yantra. Her bare torso is elegantly adorned with intricate jewelry, emphasizing her divine power. Her delicate facial features include glaring eyes, full lips gently curved into a serene smile, and gracefully arched brows.Provenance: Collection of Francoise Leroy-Laveissiere, who was an expert for Asian Art at the Cabinet Beurdeley & Leroy-Laveissiere at Drouot, Paris, in the 1970s. Thence by descent in the family.Condition: Very good condition with only minor old wear and few tiny nicks. Beautiful, chocolate-brown patina overall.Weight: 532 gDimension: Height 9.5 cmMaheshvari is a revered Hindu goddess regarded as the shakti or consort of Lord Shiva, referred to as Maheshvara. She is often counted among the Sapta Matrikas (the 'Seven Mother Goddesses'), each associated with one of the principal male deities in Hinduism. In this role, Maheshvari embodies the powerful, protective qualities of Shiva, channeling his creative and transformative energies. In iconography, Maheshvari typically carries the attributes of Shiva, such as the trident (trisula) and the hourglass drum (?amaru), symbolizing cosmic balance and rhythmic creation. Venerated especially in Shakta and Shaiva traditions, Maheshvari is both a maternal guardian and a fierce protector, underscoring the profound connection between Shiva and Shakti in Hindu cosmology.
