A RARE EGG-YOLK-YELLOW GLASS BRUSH WASHER, JUREN TANG MARK, EARLY 20TH CENTURYChina. The washer of compressed spherical form, gently rising from a recessed base supported by a short foot to an inverted mouth. The glass of a rich egg yolk-yellow color. The recessed base with a four-character mark Jurentang zhi (Hall where Benevolence Resides) within double squares.Provenance: From the private collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, New York. Alan Hartman (1930-2023) was an influential American art dealer, who took over his parents' antique business in Manhattan and established the legendary Rare Art Gallery on Madison Avenue, with further locations in Dallas and Palm Beach. His wife Simone (nee Horowitz) already served as assistant manager of the New York gallery before the couple married in 1975, and together they built a renowned collection for over half a century and became noted art patrons, enriching the collections of important museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (which opened the Alan and Simone Hartman Galleries in 2013) as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum in New York. Alan Hartman has been described as the greatest antiques dealer of our generation, and was widely recognized as a world authority in Chinese jade, bronzes, and Asian works of art. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, light surface scratches, and the upper rim lightly smoothened.Weight: 60.7 g Dimensions: Diameter 7 cmThe Juren Tang (The Hall where Benevolence Resides) in Zhongnanhai was the building in which Yuan Shikai (1859-1916) lived and also where he had his office around 1915. Yuan Shikai was the first President of the Republic of China and Emperor of the short-lived Empire of China (1915-1916), taking the era name Hongxian. In 1916, Guo Baochang, an antique dealer with a good relation to the court, was appointed to oversee Hongxian's new imperial porcelain and works of art production. The intent from the outset was that the items produced were to be of excellent quality. The biscuit used for the porcelain wares was very thin, the enamels were sent from the Imperial Workshops and the mark used was a red seal reading Juren Tang zhi. The general quality of items produced was reputed to be excellent. Yuan Shikai abdicated as Emperor on 22 March 1916 and resumed his presidency, passing away shortly after in June 1916. Following his death, production ceased, and the kilns and workshops were destroyed. However, enamels, tools, and molds were taken by workers, who then replicated Juren Tang wares, marking their pieces Hongxian nianzhi (also Hongxian Yu Chih or Hongxian Yuan Nian), mostly in Kaishu script. The earliest copies were of exceptionally high quality, as they still relied on imperial tools and materials, but as production increased and imperial resources were depleted, quality declined. Some argue that all Hongxian marked pieces were produced posthumously, with Juren Tang possibly being the only genuine mark of the Hongxian period. Regardless, surviving examples demonstrate that the porcelain and art industry experienced a surge in creativity and craftsmanship during this period and for decades thereafter, with high-quality works bearing either the Hongxian or Juren Tang marks.
