拍品描述
Tibet. The four-armed Vishnu seated in dhyanasana on a lotus throne and holding accoutrements in his four hands, dwarfed in size by his mighty celestial vehicle with muscular upper body, one hand holding a vajra, the other a noose, the arms and wings stretched out and scaly legs bent as he takes flight, the separately worked head with a ferocious face with bulging eyes and fiery eyebrows, the short beak slightly agape below a wide nose, flanked by pendulous earlobes suspending loose earrings, and surmounted by a foliate crown.Provenance: Jean Lostalem, Galerie Slim Bouchoucha, Louvre des Antiquaires, Paris, 2012. A private collection in Western France, acquired from the above, and thence by descent. A copy of an authentication certificate from Galerie Slim Bouchoucha, written and signed by Jean Lostalem, dated 28 January 2012, dating the piece to the 18th century, accompanies the lot. Galerie Slim Bouchoucha was established in 1968 by Jean Lostalem in Paris, and specializes in Asian art, particularly from Tibet and India. The gallery is now managed by Lostalem's son Michel and situated in the vibrant Marais district. The gallery's longstanding presence and specialization have established it as a respected institution within the international art community.Condition: Good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities, light dents, rubbing and losses to gilt, few tiny tears rubbing to the gilt, old soldering marks to one nipple, few tiny tears to edges, remnants of pigments, small areas of verdigris.Weight: 531 g Dimensions: Height 28 cmExpert's note: It is unusual that Vishnu would be so much smaller than his vehicle Garuda, and images of Vishnu riding Garuda across eras and empires commonly show them to be of more similar size than seen on the present lot. This difference in sizes could explain why Jean Lostalem identified the figure atop Garuda as a four-armed tantric deity as opposed to the Supreme Being. However, a Nepalese gilt-copper repousse plaque in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (object number 2012.463) dated by inscription to the year 1004 and depicting the same subject shows Garuda to be considerably larger and shows that this kind of composition is rooted in Newari craftsmanship which profoundly influenced Tibetan sculpture. Vishnu was the premier deity of the North Indian Gupta clan, and Garuda their dynastic symbol - a royal association that continued with the Licchavi kingdom in Nepal. Such images allowed Nepalese kings to identify themselves with the Hindu gods as symbols of divine kingship and ritual authority, and Buddhists in Tibet would replicate these symbolic compositions for centuries to come.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Bonhams New York, 13 March 2017, lot 3037 Price: USD 18,750 or approx. EUR 23,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A gilt copper alloy repousse plaque of Garuda, Tibet, 16th century Expert remark: Compare the closely related modeling and form of the Garuda with similar pose and expression. Note the upper arch, the different size (46.5 cm) and the slightly earlier date.
