拍品描述
Well modeled in a dynamic pose with legs outstretched and claws spread, the head turned backwards, boldly detailed with a wide open mouth in a ferocious roar revealing sharp fangs, flared nostrils, and bulging eyes below prominent eyebrows, the ears pricked. The stripes are finely outlined with neat incision work and the face accentuated with red and white pigments.Provenance: Jean Lostalem, Galerie Slim Bouchoucha, Louvre des Antiquaires, Paris, 2001. A private collection in Western France, acquired from the above, and thence by descent. A copy of an authentication certificate from Galerie Slim Bouchoucha, written and signed by Jean Lostalem, dated 15 March 2001, describing the present lot as a snow lion from Mongolia, and dating it to the 18th/early 19th century, accompanies the lot. Galerie Slim Bouchoucha was established in 1968 by Jean Lostalem in Paris, and specializes in Asian art, particularly from Tibet and India. The gallery is now managed by Lostalem's son Michel and situated in the vibrant Marais district. The gallery's longstanding presence and specialization have established it as a respected institution within the international art community.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities, few light dents, surface scratches, small nicks, and few minuscule losses.Weight: 857 g (incl. frame) Dimensions: Size 24.8 x 24 cm (the plaque), 31.5 x 30 cm (incl. frame)Mounted and set within a gilt-lacquered wood frame. (2)Expert's Note: Gilt-bronze or copper repousse depictions of tigers are exceptionally rare—tiger skins appear more frequently in these two mediums than the animals themselves, while lions are far more common. This rarity may explain why Jean Lostalem initially identified the subject as a snow lion, despite the presence of stripes that clearly mark it as a tiger. This misidentification likely contributed to the original attribution to Mongolia, whereas Tibet appears to be a more plausible origin, particularly given its strong resemblance to the tiger figure at Christie's (see auction result comparison). Additionally, the auction result comparison also shows a Tibetan snow tiger, sold at Zacke, which differs significantly from our tiger.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 21 September 2005, lot 153 Price: USD 10,800 or approx. EUR 16,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A gilt bronze figure of a tiger, Tibet, circa 15th century Expert remark: Compare the related subject with similar stripes. Note this is a cast bronze figure (15.2 cm) as opposed to a repousse plaque like the present lot.Auction result comparison: Type: Related - see expert's note Auction: Zacke, Vienna, 16 October 2021, lot 352 Price: EUR 5,056 or approx. EUR 6,100 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A gilt copper-repousse 'snow lion' plaque, 17th-18th century Expert remark: Compare the related modeling and gilding. Note the size (29.8 x 29 cm).
