拍品描述
TWO INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTINGS, MUGHAL EMPIRE, 18TH-19TH CENTURYOpaque pigments, gouache, and gold paint on paper. The first is in the style of the reign of Jahangir (1605-1627), finely painted with a winged angel seated in an open palanquin of hexagonal form carried by a procession of similar celestial maidens, her head protected from the elements by an umbrella raised by flying divinities. The angels carry perfume bottles, vessels, fly whisks, among other items of necessity, all within a thick cloud against the backdrop of a city landscape. The second dates from the 18th - 19th century, with a lady gazing into a mirror held up by her attendant as she adorns herself in preparation for a meeting with her lover, her handmaidens to the side, all set inside a verandah detailed with blossoming flowers, a peacock, and a fountain.Provenance: From an old private estate in Austria. Condition: Good condition with wear, minor soiling, light browning, few small losses to edges, expected minor fading and little flaking to pigments, possibly minuscule touchups. The two sheets are inseparably pasted together.Dimensions: Image size 25 x 15.5 cm (each sheet)Angels in Mughal art reveal a fascinating synthesis of cultural and religious influences, particularly during the 16th and 17th centuries, a period marked by early globalization. With the arrival of European traders and Jesuit missionaries, Christian artworks made their way to the Mughal court, where they were adapted and reinterpreted to suit the imperial aesthetic and religious context. Angels, often inspired by Christian iconography, were integrated into Mughal and Persian miniature paintings, blending Western stylistic elements with local traditions. These depictions were not only artistic expressions but also served as tools of imperial representation, showcasing the Mughal rulers' openness to diverse cultural motifs while maintaining their authority and spiritual grandeur. This fusion underscores the cosmopolitan nature of the Mughal court and its role as a mediator of global artistic exchanges.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Indian miniature painting depicting an angel riding a composite camel, dated to the reign of Jahangir, in the British Museum, registration number 1937,0710,0.332. Compare a closely related Mughal miniature painting of the Vilaval Ragini, dated to the 18th century, in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig, inventory number Z 6737.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Zacke, Vienna, 18 October 2018, lot 644Price: EUR 2,860 or approx.
