AN INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTING OF A COMPOSITE HORSE AND RIDER, MUGHAL EMPIRE, 18TH-19TH CENTURYNorth India, Rajasthan. Opaque pigments and gold paint on paper. Set inside a frame, behind glass. Finely painted to depict a rearing horse created as a composite of various animals and figures, the rider dressed in fine robes, a halo to the back of his head, holding the reins taut with one hand and a spear in the other. The back inscribed in Persian.Provenance: A private collection in southern Germany, assembled between 1961 and 2003, and thence by descent in the family. Condition: Good condition with wear and manufacturing irregularities. Small losses to the edges, creasing, browning of paper, and soiling. The mounting reinforced with tape on the back.Dimensions: Image size 28 x 18 cm, Size incl. frame 42 x 32 cmComposite animals appear in Mughal painting from the late 16th century onwards. Animals such as camels, elephants, and horses are composed of intertwined animals and humans, usually with a human or demon riding them.
