拍品描述
A PATA OF THE JAGANNATH TRIAD, ORISSA, 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURYEastern India. Opaque pigments on cloth. Finely painted with the trinity of Puri from the inner sanctum of the Jagannath temple. On the right is the principal deity, Jagannath, a form of Vishnu. On the left is his brother Balabhadra with his sister Subhadra in the center, each adorned in the bada-singhara vesha, the dress of the gods at the end of the day in which they are adorned with a silk cloth and decorated with flowers. The three deities are depicted within the central tower, flanked by Shiva and Brahma, and surrounded by figures of priests, dancers, and worshippers. At the top of the painting, in an arc above the temple tower, are the dasavataras (ten incarnations of Vishnu). To the left of the arc of avatars is the Kanchi-avijana scene in which Balabhadra and Jagannath are receiving a drink from the milkmaid Manika. To the right of the dasavataras are Rama (in green) and his brother Lakshmana (in yellow) battling Ravana, the multi-headed demon king of Lanka. In the center of the bottom horizontal panel is a depiction of the Lion Gate at the eastern entrance to the temple complex. To the right of this scene is the seashore with a fish swimming in the Bay of Bengal, a reference to Puri's location on the seaside. Provenance: Swiss trade. Acquired from a private estate.Condition: Good condition with wear and manufacturing irregularities. Minor soiling, some rubbing, and flaking to pigment. Small tears and holes to the outer edges. Dimensions: Size 71.5 x 59.5 cmFramed behind glass. This image is directly inspired by those found in the inner sanctum of the Jagannath temple in Puri in the state of Odisha, situated on the eastern coast of India. As per temple records, King Indradyumna of Avanti built the main temple of Jagannath at Puri. The temple is famous for its annual Ratha Yatra, or chariot festival to honor the three gods, in which the three principal deities are pulled on huge and elaborately decorated raths, or temple cars. The statues of the Jagannath triad are aniconic, abstract figures with dominant faces and the absence of any lower limbs. The figure of Subhadra also lacks arms. They are carved from neem wood and stand on a platform in the sanctum of the temple. Literature comparison:Compare a closely related pata painting for pilgrims depicting the trinity of the Puri, Odisha, Puri district, dated late 19th century, in the collection of Pratapaditya and Chitra Pal, and exhibited by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Puja and Piety: Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist Art from the Indian Subcontinent, 17 April-28 August 2016. Compare a closely related painting of the triad of Jagannath-Subhadra-Balabhadra, Orissa, dated circa 1900, 46 cm wide, exhibited by Joost Van den Bergh in Works from, and inspired by, the collection of Christian Zacharias, London, 2021, and illustrated on his website, no.
