拍品描述
A RARE ANDESITE FIGURE OF THE DIVINE SAGE AGASTYA, EAST JAVA, 12TH-13TH CENTURYIndonesia. Finely carved standing in samabhanga atop a double-lotus base, his left hand holding a water jar (kamandalu), his right clasped around a trident. Adorned with large rudraksha jewelry and dressed in a pleated dhoti, elegantly falling in drapes, and secured to the center with an embellished belt. Leonardo Vigorelli, Bergamo, Italy, acquired from the above. Angelo Attili was an Asian art dealer based in Parma, Italy, specializing in classical and tribal works of art from India, Nepal, China, and Southeast Asia. He was a widely respected expert who regularly exhibited at major art fairs. Leonardo Vigorelli, a retired Italian art dealer and renowned collector, once specialized in African and ancient Hindu-Buddhist art. With a background in anthropology and decades of travel and field research across India, the Himalayas, Southeast Asia, and Africa, he founded the prestigious Dalton Somare art gallery in Milan, now managed by his two sons.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, natural imperfections, expected losses, nicks, scratches, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations.Dimensions: Height 50 cmAgastya was a revered Indian sage of Hinduism. In the Indian tradition, he is a noted recluse and an influential scholar in diverse languages of the Indian subcontinent. He and his wife Lopamudra are the celebrated authors of hymns 1.165 to 1.191 in the Sanskrit text Rigveda and other Vedic literature. Agastya is one of the most important figures in several medieval-era Southeast Asian inscriptions, temple reliefs and arts. He was particularly popular in Java due to his teaching of Saiva Siddhanta, which was easily accepted into the Javanese society. He introduced the Vedic science and the Pallavan Grantha script, but his popularity declined when Islam started to spread throughout the islands of Indonesia.
