拍品描述
Indonesia. The two-stringed musical instrument (hasapi) with a seated ?gure surmounting the terminal, wearing an elaborate turban and holding his knees close to his chest. The base with a projection beneath the resonating chamber incised with an inverted mask.Provenance: From the collection of Johannes Schaaf, Germany, assembled between the 1970s-1990s. Johannes Schaaf (1933-2019) was a German film, theatre and opera director and actor. He initially studied medicine at the Universities of Tuebingen and Berlin, but moved into theatre during the 1950s, during which he worked at the Staatstheater Stuttgart as actor and assistant stage director. During the 1960s, he became acclaimed through multiple movies and TV productions. His film Trotta was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival. He was head of the jury at the 19th Berlin International Film Festival. His movie Tattoo was one of the first films to address the generational tensions during the early years of Germany's "student revolution".Condition: Very good condition with wear, traces of use, and natural imperfections including expected age cracks and fissures. Few nicks, light scratches, minuscule losses.Weight: 649 g Dimensions: Length 80 cmWith an associated wood stand. (2)The Batak of northern Sumatra comprise six groups: the Toba, Mandaling, Angkola, Pakpak/Dairi, Simalingun, and Karo. All share a common origin myth and ancestor (Si Raja Batak), have similar kinship and marriage customs, employ a common language and script, and emphasize certain ritual practices. Until the mid-twentieth century, political power was in the hands of chiefs and the council of elders, while spiritual power resided with the priest (datu), who had great influence on Batak life. The Batak developed a distinctive two-stringed musical instrument (hasapi), generally referred to as a lute. The instrument is carved from a single piece of wood except for the sound board, which is a replacement for the original. The back of the resonating chamber has an oval aperture, and both ends of the neck have pierced scrolls which were formerly linked by a chain or cord. The two holes beneath the ?gure are for string-tightening pegs.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Batak hasapi dated 19th century, 77 cm high, in the Yale University Art Gallery, loan number ILE2012.30.281.
