TWO CARVED WOOD SPOONS, TORAJA CULTURE, 19TH OR EARLY 20TH CENTURYIndonesia, Sulawesi. The spoons carved from light wood in form of a boat, one terminating in a bird head at the handle, the other with a stylized buffalo head finial with horns and with a dark wood inlay below. (2)Provenance: French trade. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, small nicks, light scratches, one wood inlay lost. Weight: 25.7 g and 21.5 g Dimensions: Length 15.6 cm and 15.8 cmThe boat motif is a common subject among Austronesian cultures, it symbolizes the journey of distant ancestors to the islands. The bird also frequently appears as a creature of the 'upper world' of departed spirits, the realm of the ancestors.
