A RARE BRONZE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA AMOGHAPASA, SRIVIJAYA PERIOD, 9TH-10TH CENTURY OR EARLIERIndonesia, Sumatra. The multi-armed deity standing in samabhanga with his radiating arms forming a halo, the primary hands holding a lotus blossom and vessel, the secondary arms clutching various attributes including a vajra, ghanta, mala, fly-whisk, and conch. Adorned with foliate jewelry and a snake wrapped across his torso, the deity dressed in a tiger-skin draped over a long dhoti, secured by a foliate belt. His serene face with heavy-lidded downcast eyes, gently arched brows, and full lips forming a compassionate smile, and the exquisitely modeled hair arranged in an ornate jatamukuta.Provenance: The Degand Collection, Brussels, Belgium. Antichita' La Balaustra, Bologna, Italy, 1999. Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi, acquired from the above. A copy of a stamped certificate written by Giuliana Zanetti of Antichita' La Balaustra, addressed to Paolo Bertuzzi, dated 7 October 1999, and confirming the dating and provenance above, accompanies this lot. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna, Italy. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother's business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than 60 years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.Condition: Excellent condition, commensurate with age. Wear, minuscule losses, minor casting flaws, signs of weathering and erosion, small nicks and light scratches. Fine, naturally grown patina with malachite encrustation.Weight: 893.8 g Dimensions: Height 25.7 cmThis unusual bronze of Amoghapasa, a tantric form of Avalokiteshvara only rarely encountered in this period, is representative of the mature style of the powerful Kingdom of Shrivijaya, spanning from Indonesia over Malaysia to Southern Thailand.Srivijaya was a Buddhist thalassocratic empire based on the island of Sumatra (in modern-day Indonesia), which influenced much of Southeast Asia and was an important center for the expansion of Buddhism from the 7th to the 12th century AD. It also was the first unified kingdom to dominate much of the Malay Archipelago. Due to its location, the powerful state over time developed more and more complex technology utilizing maritime resources. The rise of the Srivijayan Empire was therefore also parallel to the end of the Malay sea-faring period.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related bronze figure of an eight-armed Avalokiteshvara, 24 cm high, found in Sulawesi and dated c. 650-850, in the Rijksmuseum, object number AK-MAK-1234.
