Raigo-zu
Raigo-zu, the image of the Buddha descending from the pure land, is a popular theme in the Vajrayana and Pure Land Buddhist schools of painting. The earliest works were painted during the Heian period (794-1185), resulting from the popularity of Pure Land Buddhism among the aristocracy in the capital. By the 13th century, with issues in the economy, politics, international and domestic affairs, the Japanese felt they were undergoing Mappo (“The Latter Day of the Law”), the last, degenerate age of buddhism during which the Dharma declines. From this period, Amida raigo-zu works surged in demand and various sculptures, paintings, woodblock prints, and stone pagodas were made for devotees to pray for a comfortable afterlife.
