拍品描述
Greyish green slate. India/ Pakistan, Gandhara, approx. 3rd to 5th century An especially well-preserved and authentic example of Gandhara art presenting a youthful Bodhisattva with curly locks of hair. The face is unusually fine and lively, the forehead, nose and chin largely adhering to the Greek ideals. Large expressive eyes with fine curved lips. A hair knot on the head with locks of hair hanging down on the forehead. Heavy jewelry on the ears. On the forehead is an indentation intended for an urna application (now missing). An important note: The depiction at hand could be a one of Buddha as a Bodhisattva, when he was still young. Buddha, whose actual name was Siddhartha Guatama, was born into an Indian princely house by the name of Shakya and only became Buddha at the age of 35 (he was born approx. 566 BC). The all-in-all well-preserved head stands in front of a numbis, the entire fragment on a black base. HEIGHT (WITHOUT BASE) 13,4 CM From a Canadian private collection, afterwards collection Sohel Ch., New Delhi - Vienna A noteworthy share of the antiques offered here – around 130 lots – originate from the Collection Sohel Ch., a successful business man from Delhi who spent many years in Vienna. The part of his collection, which we here offer, was mainly acquired in the art trade of Vienna. The chief reason for his collecting activity, which he perpetuated with considerable specialized knowledge, sense for quality and great committment, was to establish a private Asian museum in his native city of New Delhi. Because of severe illness, it was impossible for him to realize his plan and he thus decided to submit us the entire complex of his "Viennese collection" for sale. Lots 186 - 195 offer rare sculptures and reliefs from Gandhara, formerly West India, Pakistan today. Gandhara was a province in the old Greco-Bactrian Empire. The Hellenistic influence arrived there as a result of the campaigns of Alexander the Great. In Gandhara originated the first Buddha depictions in history. They are singular is the integration of Indian and Greco-Roman style – interestingly, the iconography of the depictions of that time have remained unchanged up to present day. Buddha depictions of Gandhara count among the great rarities in the art market.
