拍品描述
Grey slate. Gandhara, 2nd to 3th cent. Maitreya (lit. "The Benevolent") counts among the oldest depictions of a bodhisattva and is also a leading theme in the art Gandhara. Maitreya has heroic physique, wearing clothes in Hellenistic style, as well as heavy jewelry. Crown in the hair with stupa symbol on the front and lotus blossoms on the sides. Characteristic for this bodhisattva is the nectar vessel containing long-life elixir, in brocade cover (for Gandhara typical) held in one hand. The facial features are open and youthful; the tall rectangular base upon which Maitreya stands barefoot, is decorated with lotus blossoms on three sides. Very well defined age characteristics; one hand missing, otherwise good preservation that enhances the attractiveness of this sculpture! On a wooden base. HEIGHT (WITHOUT BASE) 59 CM From the collection of a French noble family, which can be traced back to évariste Regis Huc. For more information see no. 195 évariste Regis Huc (1813 – 1860), one of the most renowned explorers of Asia and missionary of the mid-19th cent, became world-famous for crossing Mongolia, Tibet and China. He was probably also the first European to reach Lhasa in 1846. The collection was systematically recorded and documented in 1967, although no data of acquisition time of the respective objects are included. Lots 186 - 195 offer rare sculptures and reliefs from Gandhara, formerly West India, Pakistan today. Gandhara was a province in the old Greco-Bactrian Empire. The Hellenistic influence arrived there as a result of the campaigns of Alexander the Great. In Gandhara originated the first Buddha depictions in history. They are singular is the integration of Indian and Greco-Roman style – interestingly, the iconography of the depictions of that time have remained unchanged up to present day.
