Gandhara, possibly 2nd – 3rd century Part of a frieze comprising an angular pillar, broadening to the foot section, and raised on a stepped base, with floral capital topped of an architrave, next to the pillar a man is shown standing, bearing moustache, clad in a toga, holding small objects in his hands, next to him there is shown the fragment of a figure, mounted on black plinth, with suspension. HEIGHT 20,7 CM From a Canadian private collection, afterwards collection Sohel Ch., New Delhi - Vienna A noteworthy share of the antiques offered here – around 130 lots – originate from the Collection Sohel Ch., a successful business man from Delhi who spent many years in Vienna. The part of his collection, which we here offer, was mainly acquired in the art trade of Vienna. The chief reason for his collecting activity, which he perpetuated with considerable specialized knowledge, sense for quality and great committment, was to establish a private Asian museum in his native city of New Delhi. Gandhara was a province in the old Greco-Bactrian Empire. The Hellenistic influence arrived there as a result of the campaigns of Alexander the Great. In Gandhara originated the first Buddha depictions in history. They are singular is the integration of Indian and Greco-Roman style – interestingly, the iconography of the depictions of that time have remained unchanged up to present day. Buddha depictions of Gandhara count among the great rarities in the art market.
