Bronze with fire gilding. Nepal, 17th until 18th cent.
A very interesting and rare bronze sculpture, preserved in its original state. Indra, originally a storm deity, was later called King of the Gods. He is in this bronze depicted with four arms and carries the attributes goad ankusha, lotus (?), vajra = thunder bolt and the magic bow vijaya. He stands in stride on a lotus base over a half-reclining elephant and bears diadem, jewelry and flaming nimbus. The horizontal Third Eye is definitive for Indra. Age and smoke patina, mostly well preserved fire gilding.
