Wood with lacquer coating and gilding, inlays. Burma, Mandalay, late Konbaung 19th / 20th cent.
Complete gilding and glistening inlays on a very effective sculpture of around 65% life-size. As notable for the Mandalay style, Buddha Guatama is depicted as a kingly prince with juvinile appearance. The facial features are male and confident, the eyes inlaid. One hand is holding the creased hem by its edge, the other holds a small object, symbol of ?grasping a grain of truth“, known as cincihna mudra. The bare feet stand on a small round lotus pedestal with inlaid decorations. A samghati with pleated ends, tall ushnisha, however, as characteristic for this style – not topped by a lotus bud or flame. Many small inlays on the samghati, seams and diadem. A prominent red lotus flower in its center.
