Bronze. Thailand, late Ayutthya to 19th cent.
This impressive bronze sculpture presents the rare depiction of a striding Buddha in a thin flowing robe, running closely along the skin. One hand is raised in the gesture of protection abhaya mudra, the other following down the curvature of the body. Youthful body with markedly large feet, athletic chest and shoulders, a strikingly ovoid elongated head conveying spirituality and royality. A tall ushnisha topped by a ketumala. Very beautiful form of the typical elegantly bent fingers on both hands. Narrow samghati with the usual cusped ends. The ?striding Buddha“ originates from the Sukhothai Kingdom period, which prevailed for almost two centuries until it was annexed by Ayutthya in 1438. This bronze shows the Sukhothai style, but also Ayutthya characteristics and could possibly be a late Ayutthya (until 1767) or later work. Dark old patina with multiple green areas. Mounted on a round, multi-stepped wooden base.
HEIGHT (WITHOUT BASE) 55,4 CM, WITH 70,5 CM
