Jade. China, Late Neolithic Qijia Culture, approx. 2400 to 1900 BC
Smaller form of an axe ben with a little opening (symbolic) for the stick. Fine white-green jade with iron, effecting a yellow-brown hue already seen with normal backlighting. In sharper transmitted light, beautiful powerful honey yellow appears. Moderate compact fine grain runs from cloudy to vertical. The axe extends from 4,6 to 5,5 cm. The upper edge is diagonally ground on one side. All edges are rounded, the circular opening is strongly conical on this hatchet and very smoothly ground. This jade was examined by Univ. Prof. Filippo Salviati, declared to be authentic, furthermore carefully and critically judged according to their time of origin. Salviati teaches Chinese art in the department of Orientalism at the University of “La Sapienza“ in Rome and is one of the most renowned jade experts.
