Jade. China, Han period, 206 BC - AD 220
Amulet shaped as stylized cicadas are one of the most common categories of funerary jades crafted during the Han dynasty and were often put in the mouth of the deceased as an auspicious symbol. The present example, carved in a greyish jade with white spots, has quite an elongated, almost rectangular shape with a slightly oval cross-section, clearly incised lines marking the essential features of the insects, the wings terminating in pointed edges, bulging lateral eyes.
