Thankga painting on fabric. Sino-Tibetan, 20th cent.
The historical Buddha Shakyamuni in lotus pose in the center, backed by a densely decorated nimbus with a red halo. He is holding a patra (begging bowl) and a lotus flower in his hands. Left and right in front of his throne are the younger Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. Directly in front of Buddha is a tall building with several stories followed by a row of arhats. Various buildings can also be seen further away around him, including stupas. The painting offers many figures including arhats, acaryas and many monks, partly located within the building. Within the brocade mounting are vajras, as well as stylised shou characters which stand for “long life”.
