拍品描述
Jade. China, Late Neolithic period, early Bronze Age, c.2200-1900 BC These two pendants are worked in the shape of axes, and despite their small size they retain all the features of their larger prototypes from which these ornamental jades are derived. They are quite similar in shape, with a lenticular cross-section and elongated profile tapering towards the unsharpened and rounded cutting edge. The butt is straighter, though the corners have also been smoothed and rounded, as opposed to the butts of the larger jade axes which are usually unrefined because inserted into wooden shafts, and hence out of sight. The contours of both pendants have been softened and the surfaces highly polished in order to provide a pleasant sensation when handled and worn in close contact with the bodies of their owners. The suspension hole is drill ed from one side only, similarly to how holes were made on the larger jade axes. The two pendants are cut out of a translucent light green jade: the stone of the smaller axe has only minor inclusions, forming pleasant shades of brown scattered over the surface, while the larger pendant contains a higher percentage of iron which darkens more than half of the jade, creating a nice contrast with the lighter part of the stone. A group of stone and jade axes exhibiting similar features is published in Lally, Chinese Archaic Jades and Bronzes, nos.11 and 25-28. 玉斧- 新石器時代晚期, 青铜器時代早期, 公元前22世紀-前19世紀?古玉全部都由意大利 Filippo Salviati 教授鑑定. SIZE 6 x 12 & 5 x 8,7 CM From an Austrian-Hungarian collection
