Netsuke, ivory. Japan, 1st half 19th cent.
Very good, coherent composition; a man is ducking down on a calligraphy scroll, which is slightly rolled up on both sides. He has a very content expression. Either the man is one of the two “misfits” Kanzan or Jitoku (K., a hermit poet usually reads to J. out of the scroll he wrote), or the immortal Bushishi, who would fly around on his scroll (there are no further indications of this). On the underside, many small written characters (abstracted) and the powerful, large himotoshi. Patina on the underside, flawless good condition.
