Sashi-netsuke, horn. Japan, 19th cent. - Meiji-period (1868 – 1912)
Tenaga is the well-known “long-arms”; with his companion Ashinaga (long-legs) they formed the ideal fisher pair. The ape here is presented as “long-arms” in terms of a parody - he is holding his short legs crossed and is using his long arms as legs instead. In addition, he is looking very foolish. Another insinuation is that he tries to grab the reflection of the full moon in the water because he wants to fish the disc out. In order to do this, he stretches his arms down as far as possible from a branch hanging above the water. The ape is also in the zodiac. Very good rounding as well as patina, small himotoshi in the back.
