Netsuke, ivory. Japan, 19th cent.
This intricately composed netsuke is rich in details and presents Choryo, who was one of the great heroes of the Han Dynasty in China. When he wanted to cross a bridge over the Wei River, he saw how an old, poor man riding a mule lost a shoe in the water. Choryo saved it and gave the shoe to the man. This netsuke shows this scene. The depiction is on an irregularly contoured plate with central himotoshi. Good patina, on bottom is the signature MASA-TOSHI 正 利 . The artist is Shinkeisai Masatoshi from the School of Tomochika in Edo-Tokyo.
