Netsuke, horn. Japan, around 1800
In China, this sennin is one of the Eight Immortals, supposedly lived in the 8th century, could make himself invisible and cover wide distances on his white mule. The powerfully formed netsuke presents him standing on skinny legs with yomogi leaf robe. He is holding a large calabash hyotan, in which his mount lives resp. from which he is curiously peeking out. The sennin head is full of character, with astonished expression and a long beard. Rare, well-polished buckhorn, himotoshi in the back.
