Netsuke, ivory. Japan, 19th cent.
Very good scenic figurative work, compactly composed. Yamauba ("Old Woman from the Mountain") is sitting, with naked breasts, long hair and is, to be exact, a mountain witch. The strong boy, Kintoki (also Kintaro), is not her own son, but she raised him. His characteristic is the axe which he swings and his passion was to fight with wild animals. Yamauba rattles with a drum and kintoki, holding a dog on a leash with a ball in front of him. Very nicely designed movements, lively expression and many details are carefully depicted. Cord channel behind and through the axe blade.
