Sandstone stele. India, Chandella dynasty, approx. 9th to 10th cent.
A very unusual and rare, powerful and quaint depiction of the fifth incarnation of the high god Vishnu, known as Vamanavatara (Vamana = dwarf). Vishnu appeared in this form to defeat the demon king Bali, who had become so mighty that he banished the other gods from paradise. Vishnu appeared as a ?dwarf“ (boy) in front of the king, but then transformed into the giant Trivikrama. The stele shows Vishnu less as a boy, but rather as a markedly bulky figure as he is commonly portrayed. Vishnu’s attributes include the wheel at the top right, the conch shankha below, the gesture varada (wish-fulfillment) on the bottom left. The hand holding the club gada is missing. Two female accompanying figures in pronounced tribhanga at the bottom.
