Bronze. India, 18th to 19th cent.
Lakshmi, goddess of beauty and fortune, Vishnu’s consort, shown here in a rare depiction as the “bringer of light”, Dipalakshmi. The bronze shows her standing on a strikingly artistic lotus pedestal. It offers a sturdy figure in slight tribhanga, sparsely clothed, wearing jewellery and decorative ribbons, while a chain hangs between her breasts. In one hand she is holding a chalice shaped lamp and an oil container in the other. Vivid and graceful face with a fine pointy nose, a long heavy queue of hair on the back. Patina, remnants of red ritual paint.
