Red stone. India, Madhya Pradesh, approx. 6th to 7th cent.
A very rare early stone stele of Kubera, also a god of abundance, guardian of earthly treasures and master of the deep earth spirits. Here he is seated with lightly bent leg on a pedestal, holds a drinking cup with money bag in flower-like shaped fingers – two of his typical attributes. He wears a tall coiffeur as well as beaded jewelry on one ear and neck. Truly fascinating face with magical expression. The appearance mainly impresses by his big belly, symbolizing lucky well-being. Damage due to age and characteristics, except one finger, in very good complete condition.
