Bronze. Cambodia, Khmer, Angkor period, Bayon, 12th to 13th cent.
A very powerful depiction of Vishnu, completly intact. He is four-armed, wearing a tall royal crown and standing on a quadratic base. The attributes are rendered at a small scale on this bronze and due to the strong patina, are only barely recognizable. They could perhaps be a disc (wheel), conch or lotus, on the hand facing the ground a disc of earth, in the other a rod, which, however, is a club – Vishnu appears here as the ?Guardian of the World“. Strong facial features, decorative chains around the chest and the famous sambat with fish-tail fold (also on the back), a prominent feature of Khmer art. Green patina with encrustations, mounted on an elegant tall and stepped metal base.
HEIGHT (WITHOUT BASE) 23,8 CM, WITH 32 CM
