Stucco. Gandhara , approx. 3rd to 4th cent.
Impressive and rare example of a large half-head of Buddha Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha. Its size is larger than that of an average natural head, the eyes are large and pronounced as typical for Gandhara works, but offer a beautiful immersed meditative gaze. The nose is large and shaped like a wedge, the mouth beneath mildly curved with deepened corners. The sculptural art of Gandhara is split into the stucco- and slate-methods. Stucco renditions are much rarer, as they are more subjected to weathering. The “locks” so typical for Buddha depictions are already present on this head, or at least implied. The first images of Buddha and bodhisattvas originate from Gandhara (ancient West-India), where Greek influences in style were adopted due to the campaigns of Alexander the Great. This half-head is gracefully mounted on a fine wood plate that is arched at the top. Signs of prolonged weathering, overall an interesting and unified effect!
