Netsuke, wood. Japan, early 19th cent.
A very good old depiction with fine rounded form. The well fed cat curled up in sleeping position rests with crossed front paws. The leaf fan bears a radially ribbed structure and a real stem forming an eyelet – a witty embellishment by the artist. The lop-eared cat neko and collar. Finely painted fur and spots, very good age patina and large himotoshi on the bottom. Cats were imported to Japan through Korea and kept only in empirial courts in the old times.
