Netsuke, ivory. Japan, Meiji Period
Humorous work depiciting the great patriarch, founder of Zen Buddhism, cutting his toenails! He is sitting on the ground and does it with rough plyers, while grimacing in pain. After nine years meditation in front of a wall, they must have been quite long ... Daruma (in Sanskrit Bodhidharma) carries his frond hossu, hier crafted in mother-of-pearl. Very good polishing and compactness, both himotoshi below are rosetted.
