Netsuke, ivory. Japan, 19th cent.
Very good fine work showing the Hanasaka Jiji in front of a dead tree stem, which he brings to flourishment. He has the ghost of his dog to thank, who was killed by his greedy neighbor (as he sniffed out a treasure). Jiji became wealthy – a long and very famous fairytake. He is holding the tool he used to dig it out in one hand. The eyelet is on the bottom, partially through the tree stem. The three character signature HO-SHUN-SAI in an oval reserve beside, tipical for the artist Masayuki who lived in Edo/Tokyo.
