Netsuke, ivory. Japan, 19th cent.
Especially exactly crafted details point to the masterful carver - Doraku from Osaka, successor of Anraku. Subtleties – like facial features of Samurai, his posture with standing spread legs (on back!) or outstretched index finger! Samurai wears eboshi on his head and complete armour as well as daisho (sword pair), he grips the katana on the handle. In front of him, an empty turned-over basket on the ground and a kneeling farmer with a funny bashful face and pointing with a finger. Precisely carved tiny details, also stylistically confident, e.g. clothing decor, straw apron of the farmer, sandels etc. Large Himotoshi on back, signature in irregular reserve DO-RAKU on the lower leg of the barefoot farmer.
